This qualitative study will use emerging grounded theory design to analyze interview transcripts of facilitators of support group for parents of children with learning disabilities to explore how they meet the diverse needs of parent group members. This study will develop 6 main themes of (a) valuing the support group experience, (b) creating and maintaining a comfortable environment using facilitation skills, (c) recruiting parents to attend support groups, (d) developing the support groups' structure to balance the parents' need for discussion and information, (e) meeting the facilitators' need for skills development, and (f) contending with limited resources which impact effective structure and strategies for support group facilitators to meet the diverse needs of parent group members. Effective skill development is considered the central phenomenon in this grounded theory study. An advisory committee is recommended to explore effective practices for support group facilitators for the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario.
