Latin American fiction has been increasingly characterized by a preoccupation with the impact of mass culture on individuals' lives and society in general. Since the 1990s, this dialogue has been approached with caution by literary critics. Critics have received the intersection between Latin American fiction and mass culture at the turn of the twenty-first century in two main ways: they either reject it for considering it an empty alienated (and alienating) pastiche, or they praise it provided that the fiction in question condemns the media's power to erode individuals' critical senses.

In my dissertation, I propose a reading that builds upon these two trends. Looking at Brazilian and Argentine contemporary narratives, I explore, in each chapter, issues that have concerned contemporary critics: the media's impact on individuals' sensibilities, and on their perceptions of history and nation; mass culture's influence on individuals' self-image and on social relations; and the effects of the commodification of literature on writers and readers. The narratives examined in this study include two novels by two Brazilian writers, Daniel Galera's Maos de cavalo (2006) and Fernando Bonassi's O menino que se trancou na geladeira (2004), and two novels by two Argentine writers, Claudia Pineiro's Betibu (2011) and Carlos Busqued's Bajo este sol tremendo (2009).

My analysis shows that this fiction is highly critical of consumer culture and that its seemingly alienated quality stems from its depiction of mass culture as an everyday object, rather than as an abstract force that manipulates individuals. Said depiction, rather than merely celebrating or expressing indifference towards late capitalism, is the result of a relationship between literature and mass culture that is more complex than mere catering to a commercial taste. These narratives seek to reach the difficult balance of being critical without being catastrophic; of being positive without being celebratory.
