This phenomenological qualitative study explored the experiences and perceptions of executive women in senior level positions (i.e. above the glass ceiling) in corporate organizations. Additionally, the study evaluated the role of both race and gender in their experiences, utilizing a comparative approach. Data was collected from 6 women using semi-structured interviews, and a preliminary questionnaire. Narrative analysis and triangulation method was used to analyze the data. Five overarching research categories (career experiences; organizational experiences; race, gender, and identity; personal experiences; additional/emergent themes) were used.

The results of this study indicate executive women share similar experiences and perceptions regardless of industry, or particular role. Likewise, executive women also have significant variation in their experiences that shape their perceptions. The findings also indicate a significant interaction of both race/ethnicity and gender which resulted in different experiences and perceptions for the women of color compared to white women participants.

Findings from this study produced several implications for future research including the need to further explore the role of race in influencing the experiences of executive women, investigation into the various new challenges women encounter once in they reach executive level, and the barriers to advancement self-imposed by women. Additionally, empirical evaluation of the correlation between organizational culture in the experiences of executive women, and the cognitive and systematic processes executive women impart when addressing the paradox of work-life balance provides a foundation for future inquiry.
