There has been a rising trend in telecommuting suggesting that there are some obvious benefits for employees and organizations (Apgar, 1998); however, many researchers have reported negative effects of telecommuting such as social isolation (Baruch & Nicholson, 1997). The purpose of my study was to examine the impact of telework and work isolation on work engagement; and empirically examine ways to reduce isolation through use of social networking and feedback environment. We found that higher frequency of telework was associated with high isolation, which in turn, negatively impacted work engagement. Moreover, a favorable feedback environment moderated the relationship between high telework and work isolation, such that when frequency of telework was high, perceptions of isolation were lower, if the feedback environment was favorable. We also found support for the job demands-resource model of engagement; job demands such as work isolation were negatively associated with engagement, while job resources such as social networking tools and feedback environment were negatively associated with work isolation and positively associated with work engagement.
