In the past two decades, research studies on the relationship between academic performance and sports participation focused on male student athletes, mixed-gender groups of high school student athletes, and intercollegiate student athletes. Little is known about the connection between academic achievement and sports participation of high school female athletes. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the perspectives of academic performance and sports participation through the lived experiences of former female student athletes. The central research question was: How did former female student athletes perceive their academic performance and sports participation? Fifteen former high school female student athletes served as the participants and ten interview questions were used to collect data. NVivo 10 software was employed for data analysis. Seven significant themes emerged in this study: (a) time management and organization, (b) a support team, (c) life skills, (d) motivation, (e) school resources, (f) lack of funds and support, and (g) lack of sleep. The findings of this study revealed that participants' perspectives of academic performance and sports participation were both positive and negative. Results also indicated that current student athletes should employ strategies to maintain a good balance between academic performance and sports participation. Recommendations for educational legislators, school administrators, teachers, sports coaches, and female student athletes as well as recommendations for future research were included.
