520 $a OBJECTIVE: This survey research addressed the perceptions and awareness of sensory processing disorder and sensory diets among licensed day care providers in New York State.
520 $a METHODS: A survey, revised from a previous study, was pilot tested and sent to seven licensed day care facilities throughout New York State. Sixty-five day care providers participated in this study.
520 $a RESULTS: 62.2% of day care providers who participated in the survey were aware of the term sensory processing disorder (SPD) while 32.3% could accurately define the term. Graduates from 2009 and later and graduates with higher degrees of education had greater accuracy in the definition of SPD. 35.4% of respondents indicated an awareness of the sensory diet. Of those who had implemented sensory diets, 92.3% identified them as at least slightly beneficial. 58.5% of participants stated they had some contact with an occupational therapist. Those who worked with children with autism or behavioral disorders could more accurately define SPD than those who had not. Ten individuals reported attending training on SPD which did not correlate with an accurate definition of SPD.
520 $a CONCLUSION: Day care providers in New York State had greater awareness of SPD than being able to provide an accurate definition of the term with an even lower awareness of the sensory diet. Occupational therapists could assist in bridging the gap by providing ongoing continuing education trainings for personnel regarding SPD and the sensory diet while also providing approaches to help manage the sensory aspects of behavior.
