This dissertation proposes a model of presenting, explaining and practicing a syntactical linguistic feature of the Spanish language for the purpose of teaching it as a foreign language. The specific feature is the use of the particle SE to express the passive idea.

The research includes a typological linguistic analysis of the said grammatical item, plus a genre analysis of authentic samples of discourse in which both concentration of use and intent have been contemplated. Also a review of current Spanish language textbooks and grammar reviews has been conducted in order to compare the results of the typological analysis and genre analysis with the way this grammatical structure is presented, explained and practiced in current language texts.

The results of the typological linguistic investigation and genre analysis show, first, that there are several ways to express passivity in the Spanish language; second, that the preferred passive form in the said language is the SE passive; third, that it represents the perfect agentless passive, and in this capacity acts in complementary distribution with other types of passive in the language. The analysis of grammars and textbooks suggests that they either underrepresent or misrepresent this grammatical form. Two main problems stand out. One of them is the lack of authentic samples of text to illustrate the use of this form in discourse. The other salient problem relates to rule formulation reproduced from previously existing grammars, but which find no confirmation in actual discourse.

The suggested model for dealing with the passive idea in Spanish involves two allied fields: genre analysis methodology for applied purposes and methodology suggested by pedagogical grammar. The Transactional Model proposed in this dissertation is a reading-writing-grammar awareness learning program to be incorporated in the regular language practice in the classroom. The model makes use of an authentic piece of discourse--genre, which extensively employs the structure to be learned, and suggests using this genre sample in a combination reading-writing task oriented program aiming at inducing grammar awareness in the foreign language learning process, and thereby improve the rate of assimilation of the foreign language.
