By employing natural habitat elements for shore stabilization purposes it is possible to create habitat, improve water quality, improve the aesthetics of our natural shores, as well as stabilize erosion. "Living shorelines" come in many forms and are defined as any structure that promotes habitat development; ranging from traditional structures that have vegetation incorporated into their design (hybrid structures), to structures comprised solely of natural components. The success of habitat development of any kind is very dependent upon water quality, temperature, available light and position within the water column. This research studied the effectiveness of down welling optimal surface water, as a way to enhance and sustain living shoreline applications. Specifically, a newly developed wave pump has been designed to deliver to oysters located below the MLW line, where water quality is less favorable for oyster development. Sixteen cages were filled with 130 oyster baby spat and deployed into the Hudson River for a ten month period, during which time oyster growth was closely monitoring. Samples were grown both at the surface and below MLW, with pumps supplying surface water to half of the bottom cages.

Upon completion of the first monitoring session, the population mean for shell length for the bottom and surface data sets was 0.97 and 1.39 cm respectively. The analysis of variance for the data sets revealed a p-value of 0.0002, which clearly indicates that there is a statistical difference between the population means of the bottom and surface groups; validating that the surface water produces larger oysters. The mean population shell length for the control and experimental buoys were 0.97 and 01.36 cm respectively. The analysis of variance revealed a p-value equal to 0.0006, clearly indicating that there is a statistical difference between the population means of the control and experimental groups; validating the effectiveness of the pumps. Similarly substantial results were found during the second monitoring session. Increased species richness and biodiversity, as well as less recorded fatalities, were discovered both in the surface and experimental cages.
