This quantitative study examined the leadership styles of public school superintendents in Michigan to determine best practices. Using the Leadership Practices Inventory, developed by Kouzes and Pozner (2001), this study examined the relationship among the superintendents' leadership styles, the State of Michigan K-12 public school district rankings, and district size. The findings revealed a positive relationship between the district's size and the superintendent's leadership style. Superintendents of larger school districts were more likely to use a transformational leadership style. The results; however, did not demonstrate a relationship between superintendents' leadership styles and the district's rank. Considering the pressure on school districts to achieve better results despite numerous challenges, it is critical to understand the demands that influence a school district and its leader. Given the responsibility of K-12 education to prepare students for personal, civic, and career success, the superintendent's leadership is of paramount importance to the achievements of not only the school district, but makes contributions for the success of students, teachers, staff, and their communities.
