Struggle for unity within Christianity has been existent since its inception. The New Testament illustrates numerous examples of Christ's apostles wrestling to harmonize on doctrinal and cultural matters. Though it would be naive to say that diversity does not present specific challenges, it is the intent of this paper to argue that Rome's pluralistic society was not only beneficial but crucial to the development of Christianity as it provided an environment in which Christianity could define and refine itself, eventually becoming a distinct religious body. Then, we suggest that the contemporary church could indeed benefit from the uniquely diverse setting in which today's times afford. To do this, we will examine Rome circa 44 BC--313 AD. At that time, Rome's diverse characteristics uniquely parallel the pluralistic society today in which the majority of the world's population dwells. From our concentrated study of Roman society during this particular period and the church's interaction with that society, we gain insight into the benefits a contemporary pluralistic society affords Christianity.
