A study of innovative and successful strategies and program interventions are key for real reduction of Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC). Disproportionate Minority Contact has plagued the juvenile justice system as a national problem for decades and although federal law has attempted to address the issue, our youth detention centers, residential facilities, and jails continue to be overflowing with a predominance of African American and Latino youth. It behooves us as a society to address the issue of DMC for numerous reasons, not the least of which is the moral imperative and the effects of discrimination of one group of people over another, as well as the financial costs to governments for spending millions of dollars on youth that may not need residential placement. This study highlights key elements of strategies utilized by federal and state governments to reduce DMC, and create positive change and better outcomes for African American and Latino youth.
