The general objective of this study was to estimate and analyze the cost per ton of shipping rice for selected sizes of bulk vessels from various U.S. Southern ports of origin to foreign importing ports. To accomplish this objective, a basic transportation model, within a linear programming framework, was developed to determine a least cost shipping pattern on the basis of the estimated shipping rates. Five additional transportation models, each with different adjusted shipping rates, were constructed to test the effects of changing shipping costs on rice shipping flows.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The 1986 calendar year was used as the base year for the analysis. Actual shipping patterns of rice exports from U.S. southern ports to world markets in 1986 was obtained to compare with the models.

The results show that transportation cost was primarily influenced by three factors: geographical distance, ship size, and ship flag. As distance increased, shipping rates increased proportionately. Size economies implied that there was considerable difference in shipping costs between larger and smaller ships with the larger ones having less unit cost per ton. In the results of the models, 40,000 DWT vessels were chosen to be largely used due to the lower per unit cost. Of the three flags used in the models, shipping cost for U.S.-flag ships was substantially higher than that of other ships. Liberian-flag ships were selected to be most frequently used for the shipments.

Models I, V and VI had the lowest total transportation cost: $42,340,273.50. The optimal shipping patterns obtained from the models bore similarities. Among the selected U.S. Southern exporting ports, Ports of Houston and Port Arthur were used to ship large amounts of rice. The study indicates that ocean transportation cost was significant and had great influence on international trade. It can be one of the important factors in determining the competitive positions of U.S. southern rice producers and exporters in the world market. Its effects should not be overlooked in the theory and study of international trade.
