This dissertation is a comparative historical study of three enterprises: Ford, General Motors, and IBM. It is argued that these enterprises have exhibited three patterns of global organization since their inception: "national form" (ca. 1905-1930); the "multi-national form" (ca. 1930-1965); and the "transnational form" (ca. 1965-). Each pattern of organization is conceptualized as consisting of a specific strategy or set of decisions by which the enterprise orients itself to its environment and allocates resources, and a structure or stable organization of production and administration. The emergence of a new pattern of organization is seen as the result of a major shift in strategy due to significant alterations in the political and economic conditions of the world economy. Strategic reorientation produces a transformation in the administrative and productive structure of the enterprise so that strategy and structure eventually align and a new pattern of organization is consolidated. In the historical narrative, the precise form assumed by these patterns of organization within each of the three enterprises is described and analyzed.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The overarching purpose of this study is to conceptualize the most recent reorganization of these enterprises, i.e., the emergence of the transnational form, by locating this form within the institutional history of these enterprises. It is argued that the strategic reorientation leading to this pattern of organization is a consequence of both the inherent limitations in the previous pattern of organization and the Kondratiev downturn which the world economy entered in late 1960's. In response to a crisis of profits, all three enterprises attempt to reduce the diversity of their product lines and simultaneously rationalize and integrate productive and administrative activities on a world-scale. This results in an increase in centralized control and the emergence of integrated, world-wide, production networks. The key mechanism in this transformation is a rapid expansion and increasingly sophisticated application of high speed communications and data processing networks which instantaneously link/integrate the globally dispersed operations of these enterprises.
