In this study, I look at a wide variety of Ilokano complex sentence constructions and isolate one type which I identify as adverbial clause construction, using semantic, functional, and syntactic criteria. I propose a taxonomy where these patterns are shown to fall under the broad phenomenon of clause combining. Clause combining branches out into coordination and subordination, with Ilokano adverbial clauses subsumed under subordination.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Using semantic criteria, eleven types of Ilokano adverbial clauses are posited. Each type is then analyzed. It is observed that these constructions exhibit certain behaviors that are consistent with language universals, while some are language specific. For example, in Ilokano, preposed conditionals have a higher frequency of occurrence than their corresponding nonpreposed forms, a language universal noted by Haiman (1978). To illustrate a language specific, Ilokano has a distinctive way of marking a counterfactual conditional. It uses an optative morpheme koma, which functions as a modal.

Given the fact that adverbial clauses are adjuncts, a syntactic analysis of these patterns show that the Adjunct Island Condition operates on these constructions, with some modification. A set of generalizations is proposed to account for the apparent constraints on extraction from sentential complements.

It is demonstrated that there seems to be a correlation between the post verbal order of adverbials and their preposability, i.e., in a construction with several adverbials, the adverbial that has to be positioned immediately after the verb tends to be nonpreposable.

It is shown that Ilokano is distinct from most Philippine languages in that it uses a construction usually referred to as same-subject construction to express purpose adverbials.

Finally, I identify and characterize two structures used in encoding adverbial clause constructions, the nominalized and the propositional forms.
