While there are several definitions of service learning in the literature, in this study service learning is defined as an academic course based on credit that involves participating in service and reflecting on that service to gain a better understanding of the curriculum and a deeper appreciation of the field (Bringle & Hatcher, 2000). Service learning often results in positive changes for the service learner and participating community (Helm-Stevens & Griego, 2009). However, the service learning experience is not without its challenges. Service learning can be voluntary and student driven, or delivered as a mandatory course.

It is the latter type of course that is the focus of this study . As an academic endeavor, service learners are exposed to individuals who are essential to their experience, and therefore are intentionally incorporated into the program. These individuals include, but are not limited to instructors, clients, supervisors, and agency staff. Service learning can exist in a traditional classroom or an online setting.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of students in their senior year of study who are enrolled in an online service learning course. Using qualitative methods, this study examined the experiences of students enrolled in a mandatory service learning course offered through the Family and Child Science department at a large research university.

The results of this study should be useful in general as a means of better understanding the experiences of students enrolled in an online service learning class. Feedback from student interviews may assist those responsible for course development and content to better understand how students perceive and engage in the course. Results of the study may also provide insight into the value and effectiveness of online service learning activities and address gaps in the literature regarding online service learning. However, because the study is limited to a course at a single institution, generalization beyond the specific course is very limited.
