The importance of retaining high-risk college students through the point of graduation is emphasized throughout the literature and has been a salient research topic for over 40 years. Numerous intervention models have been implemented in colleges across the country, and studies suggest that the interventions contribute to improved student retention. The different models, however, appear to vary in effectiveness for reducing student attrition. The problem this qualitative summative program evaluation addressed was that the Women in Transition (WIT) program, a transition program at one northeastern college, had not been evaluated. The primary purpose of this summative evaluation, which used the management-orientation approach, was to collect and analyze archived, deidentified data involving the perceptions and experiences of program participants in order to make research- and data-based recommendations for improving the program. Program participants are primarily first-generation students of cultural or ethnic minority status. The unit of analysis was contributed by a representative sample group of 57 WIT program graduates. Implications of the program evaluation were that, although participants recognized a wide variety of program benefits, several strategies were identified for improving the program. Strategies included (a) expansion of the program, (b) procedural changes within the program, (c) an added emphasis involving personal relationships among participants, (d) increased academic and personal support, and (e) the addition of career counseling and job-placement services. Participants additionally recognized their personal responsibility for program participation. Recommendations for educational practice entailed college and program administrators considering participants' recommendations for program improvement. The recommendation for future research was for college administrators to determine whether career counseling and job-placement services would be effective, research-based additions to the program activities.
