This thesis explores the Harry Potter series through the lens of third-wave feminism as a means of arguing that J.K. Rowling has created a cast of strong, dynamic role models for both her child and adult readers. By bringing Harry Potter gender criticism up to date, "Harry Potter and the Third Wave: Recontextualizing the Series that Shaped a Generation" refutes some past gender-focused articles that have viewed the series from an outdated perspective, failing to take modern gender theory into account. It seeks not only to recontextualize the series itself in terms of its historical place in gender theory, but also to recontextualize individual scenes from within the books that critics have often taken out of context. Viewing the series as a single text in order to best evaluate the ways in which its characters develop and change, this thesis contends that Rowling powerfully challenges binary thinking about gender. Contra many previous assumptions, Harry Potter shatters the illusion that certain traits are inherent to either gender. In reality, it depicts a wide range of both male and female characters who operate at different points along the gender spectrum depending on their immediate circumstances.
