The purpose of this study was to compare breathing for speech in speakers of Chinese, English, Japanese, and Vietnamese. The pattern of inspirations which occurred during the reading of a passage was compared across four groups of participants. These groups were made up of native speakers of the four languages. All of the speakers read Aesop's fable The Fox and the Grapes in their native language. Twenty-five of the speakers of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese also read the passage in English both prior to and after training in accent modification. Instrumentation was utilized to record respiratory signals from each subject and data were gathered on the time taken to read the passage, the average syllable length, the number of inspirations, the number of intersentence inspirations, the number of intrasentence inspirations, and the average time between inspirations.

520 $a Results suggest that speakers of the languages under study employ respiration for speech differently from each other. The results also indicate that native language inspiration patterns transfer to the target language prior to training in accent modification, and this could contribute to less intelligible speech in the second language. This finding raises the question that perhaps respiration should be addressed in accent modification training.
