For over a century, America has been known as a "melting pot" of cultures and the immigrant experience is a subject that has been explored for as long as people in other countries sought to make the United States their new home. Indeed, immigration is one of the most heated issues in the current political discourse. However, the children of immigrants are in a unique group of their own. There is no universally accepted term for these individuals so that "first generation American" and "second generation American" are used interchangeably. Though born in the United States, their first language might not be English. Even if it is, they then face a language barrier with their own parents. Charged with the task of straddling two cultures, they often grapple with identifying, combining, or selecting a culture to belong to.

My thesis therefore details the experiences of American-born individuals whose parents emigrated from other countries. The text is a combination of personal essay and oral history. In the former, I reflect on growing up with Polish parents. In the latter, I include the voices of six other individuals from various backgrounds to echo my own sentiments. Together, I approach themes such as language, education, identity, religion, and familial obligation in order to show that we, despite our cultural differences, have shared experiences.
