This study examined the relationship between political ideology, moral reasoning, and authentic leadership behaviors. A total of 130 working adult graduate students from Angelo State University and Our Lady of the Lake University participated in the study; students were enrolled in leadership programs at their respective universities. Participants completed a single-item self-report measure of political ideology, the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) to measure levels of moral reasoning within five domains (care, fairness, authority, loyalty, and sanctity) and the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) in order to measure levels of authentic leadership. This study contains two research areas. For research area one, a regression analysis was used to determine if a predictable relationship existed between the independent and dependent variables, while controlling for general self-efficacy, gender, age, ethnicity, and education level. For research area two a regression analysis was used to determine if a predictable relationship existed between political ideology and moral reasoning (care, fairness, authority, loyalty, and sanctity) when controlling for general self-efficacy, gender, age, ethnicity, and education level. Further statistical analyses were employed when appropriate (i.e. ANOVA, t-test, post hoc). The results indicated that moral reasoning within the foundation of sanctity significantly predicted (p < .05) authentic leadership scores, while care fairness, authority, and loyalty failed to predict authentic leadership. Results also showed that political ideology significantly predicted moral reasoning within four foundations of moral reasoning (fairness, authority, loyalty, and sanctity) at a p < .05 significance level; these finding were consistent with the previous research. A surprising result showed that political ideology did not predict moral reasoning on the foundation of care. Therefore, results resulted in a rejection of five of the six null hypotheses tested. A discussion of findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research are provided.
