Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2014.

This thesis examines instructors' perceptions and uses of Plagiarism Detection Services in the first-year writing classroom. Many a priori conceptions about these programs have emerged from composition scholars, instructors, and administrators alike. However, little research about their actual functions in the first-year writing course exists. The literature review offers background information about the contentious aspects of plagiarism (and the legal and pedagogical fervor with which it is met), about Plagiarism Detection Services, and how to aim to reduce plagiarism pedagogically. Further, the thesis offers an analysis of a survey and focus group that were conducted to garner data about how instructors use PDSs in their first-year writing classes. The results from these studies have yielded data that can contribute to the composition community's understanding of how the tools are currently being used in first-year writing classrooms, and to inform best practices regarding their use in the future.
