The researchers conducted a mixed-methods study to determine the effectiveness of training provided by Lipscomb Ayers Institute to instructional coaches as measured by teacher and coach efficacy and school climate. Instructional coaches and principals were interviewed to explore the work of coaching. The findings of this study indicate the importance of relationship building as part of the work of coaching. It also indicates that coaching is ongoing and requires a significant amount of time for implementation. Additionally, a characteristic that the researchers found to positively impact coach efficacy was that of leadership. Many of the coaches' desire to assume a coaching role was due to the possibility of promotion into a leadership role. The coaches also noted that the leadership of the school dictates how successful the coach will be. When coaches felt supported by their leadership, they felt more confident. Participants of the study noted that the culture was becoming more positive as teachers were focusing conversations on student achievement.
