This study examined the relationship between language maintenance, language shift, and interpersonal closeness between grandchildren and their "closest" grandparent in Taiwanese families. A quantitative analysis of data on 56 young adults of Taiwanese ethnic origin was conducted through the use of questionnaires measuring language fluency, degree of intergenerational closeness, intergenerational communication patterns, and reasons for intergenerational closeness. A qualitative analysis of a subset of fifteen subjects was conducted through the use of a semi-structured interview which explored other aspects of the intergenerational relationship that contribute to the quality of the relationship beyond language fluency and actual communication patterns.

The primary hypothesis of this study which posited that language shift is negatively correlated with interpersonal closeness between grandchildren and their closest grandparent was not supported. The secondary hypothesis of this study which posited that the communication patterns between grandchildren and their closest grandparent is primarily dependent on the linguistic capacity of the grandchild was also not supported. However, language maintenance and language shift was found to have an impact on the intergenerational relationship in other ways such as limiting the degree and type of communication between the generations. Cultural and generational gaps were also found to significantly impact the intergenerational relationship. Parental involvement in encouraging and facilitating the intergenerational relationship was found to have a positive impact on the relationship between grandchildren and their closest grandparent. Finally, culturally distinct elements related to intergenerational closeness such as fond memories of care-taking behavior on the part of the grandparent, a desire to learn more about Taiwanese culture, and a desire to hear the life-story of their grandparent were found.
