Environmental issues have been a consistent problem that many countries have had to adhere to. There have been many demands on global resources, it was not until the end of the 1960s did the ideals and visions about environmental protection begin to come to fruition. The UN in 1972 convened the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm which was considered to be a very pivotal moment in taking environmental problems more seriously. Declaring 19 principles that represent an environmental doctrine, this conference laid the groundwork for the new environmental agenda of the United Nations. The General Assembly in December of 1972 established the United Nations Environment Program, which led the efforts of the United Nations on behalf of the global environment. After the implementation of this program several countries have taken environmental issues more seriously in recent years but countries like China had several problems with trying to find a balance between environmental protection and economic growth. During the Mao Zedong era China abused the environment greatly to achieve economic and social gains. Due to the political leaders in power China was solely focused on its advancement in the global sphere. In recent years because of the shift in the political leaders in China environmental protection has become a more prevalent factor in Chinese politics and this can be see through the various non-governmental organizations and policies implemented.
