Many studies have found that available neighborhood greenspace (GS) is inversely related to stress, morbidity, and mortality. Experimental studies have shown that exposure to GS can attenuate stress. Stress is a factor in the development and progression of disease. Analysis of existing data showed a significant relationship between neighborhood GS and health outcomes in Baltimore, MD. A survey was distributed in a stratified random sample with some snowball methods to adult residents of Baltimore. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that hours of exposure to GS was significantly inversely related to scores on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), controlling for stressful life events, demographics, physical activity, and other factors. Individual PSS scores were significantly correlated with community level health outcomes. In the context of other research, results support that the relationship between hours of GS exposure and stress is a plausible mechanism behind the relationship between neighborhood GS and health outcomes.
