As the type of work that is being done dramatically shifts from physical to knowledge based, so does the way in which the work gets done. These changes include the introduction of hoteling, virtual offices, and shared workspace. With these, and many other, alternative ways of working comes a change in office space.

One of the ways businesses are adapting to these changes is by making the radical shift from traditional offices and cubicles to a work environment that contains no permanent walls, aside from the four that keep the building standing. CEOs and senior team members alike are giving up their private offices and moving to the open floor with everyone else.

Though this shift seems simple, there are many obstacles which an organization planning to make this type of change needs to be prepared to face. In an attempt to help companies with one of these challenges, the intent of this dissertation is to explore the relationship between individuals and their attitudes about communication that takes place in this new type of environment.

105 employees of an open space work environment were surveyed to determine how their individual personality types are related to their satisfaction with the level of various aspects of communication that exist in an open space work environment. Significant relationships were found in three of the six hypothesized relationships. Extraversion was found to correlate positively with communication climate satisfaction, which supported the proposed hypothesis. Although conscientiousness also correlated positively with communication climate, the original hypothesis suggested an inverse relationship would exist between the two variables. Overall satisfaction with open space design was found to significantly correlate with overall satisfaction with communication, which supported the proposed hypothesis.
