Since its invention in the late nineteenth century, countless films have been produced which have served a purpose beyond their entertainment value. These films have functioned as an outlet for social commentary and were created as metaphors for emotion or allowed for a collective cathartic release. Although the characters, setting and plot differ, these motion pictures are linked in their connection to the philosophy of Existentialism and its creative offspring, Expressionism.

At the end nineteenth century, Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy of Existentialism caused many to question the cultural, religious and political foundations of society. Eventually, the creative community began to capture the passion of Existentialism on canvas. Artists like Edvard Munch, Vasily Kandinsky and Alfred Kubin were empowered by the liberating and transformative principles of Existentialism. Expressionist art evolved. As film advanced as an art form and business at the turn of the twentieth century, Existentialist ideals and Expressionist images began to appear on screen.

After World War I, the German film industry was one of the few businesses left in the Weimar Republic that was still profitable. Filmmakers, like director Robert Wiene, utilized Expressionist artists and created works like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). These films conveyed a nation's anguish on the screen. The German Expressionist film movement would last from 1919 to the rise of Nazism and many filmmakers would flee Germany for Hollywood. In America, these filmmakers would continue to help their craft evolve. Their influence resulted in the Film Noir movement and motion pictures like The Maltese Falcon (1941) a film, which had at its heart a strong connection to Existentialism. Other films, including the groundbreaking Citizen Kane (1941), would mimic its German predecessors and be characterized as "American Expressionism.".

Contemporary audiences are exposed to films and media content that can be traced back to Existentialism and Expressionism. Yet, they are largely unaware of this connection. The relationship between film and Expressionist art is known; however, in most literature the connection ends there. This dissertation weaves a thread that links Nietzsche to filmmaking while providing context and meaning to current works influenced by Existentialism and Expressionism.
