For his series on death and disasters, Andy Warhol appropriated not only subject matter but many of the aesthetic and conceptual devices of mass media. In Flash - November 22, 1963, the car crashes and race riots, Warhol emphasized the status of images as commodified spectacles. A portfolio focused on the assassination of JFK, Flash undermines political personas and the authority of news accounts of the assassination by enforcing the instability of narrative and icon. Mining the grotesque imagery of news photos, Warhol's paintings of car crashes juxtapose anonymous victims with decorative devices to ironically highlight consumption of public death. This becomes particularly apparent in the mirroring of spectatorship in the passerby of White Burning Car III. Similarly constructed, the race riots, based on photographs of Civil Rights demonstrations in Birmingham, use color, repetition and contrast to undermine viewer identification and political content.
