Second-year university foreign language students often lack necessary skills to accomplish the expected tasks of reading and participating in meaningful discussion about literary, cultural and other texts in the target language. In response to this need, the present study was designed to determine whether the computer can be utilized as an effective medium for applying principles of communicative language teaching to foreign language reading comprehension assistance. The study was conducted at the University of Texas at Austin during fall semester, 1997, with 145 volunteer participants from third- and fourth-semester German courses.

Gabriele Wohmann's short story, "Das Pilotenprojekt" [The Pilot Project], was selected as a suitably challenging text for measuring the effectiveness of computerized target language paraphrases as comprehension aids compared with more traditional approaches. Specifically, each participant was randomly assigned to one of five treatment conditions: (1) conventionally printed story on paper with attached German-English glossary ("Traditional"); (2) story presented as a computer program with German-English glossary items instantly available ("English Translation Dictionary"); (3) computer program with German-German glossary ("German Dictionary"); (4) computer program with German paraphrases of entire phrase or sentence ("German Paraphrase"); (5) computer program that did not include vocabulary assistance ("No Help").

The present study demonstrates the computer's viability as a tool for improving reading comprehension. Moreover, the communicative practice of paraphrasing is shown to be effective when integrated into interactive foreign language reading software. The German Paraphrase and the English Translation Dictionary treatment groups were superior to all other groups on recall of factual information, recall of inferences, total number of recall points, and number of correct responses to multiple choice comprehension questions. Integration of target language paraphrases into computerized reading programs was found to be the most promising comprehension aid tested, with five advantages over computerized translation dictionaries: paraphrases foster natural communication; focus on meaning; clarify syntactical structures; expose readers to more target language; and are consistent with interactive reading theory. Recommendations for further study include the effectiveness of computerized paraphrases for students' comprehension of lengthier and non-literary texts, as well as several different paraphrase strategies.
