My dissertation Literatur, Rasse und Geschlecht. Eine Studie zum Diskurs um die Jahrhundertwende analyzes the relationship between the social constructions of "race" and gender in four German literary works whose female protagonists come from a non-European non-white racial background. The first of these four texts is Das Sinngedicht (1881) by Gottfried Keller which contains the two novellas "Don Correa" and "Die Berlocken." The African protagonist of the former shows how a non-white female is "successfully" integrated into a European cultural context, while the American-Indian heroine of the latter remains unassimilated. Gabriele Reuter's novella "Aphrodite und ihr Dichter" (1894) depicts various aspects of the transculturation of a British-African "mulatto" woman. The German-Brasilian female protagonist of Heinrich Mann's novel Zwischen den Rassen (1907) is constructed as a hybrid figure not only with respect to race and culture, but at times also to gender. Finally, in Max Dauthendey's narrative cycle Die acht Gesichter am Biwasee (1911), the first and the last novella with their Japanese and German protagonists are read contrapuntally to show how they mutually relativize the concepts of racial beauty and exoticism.

The linkage of and parallels between the construction of "race" and gender surface not only in literary discourse. Indeed, the positionality of European women and their non-European counterparts around the turn of the century is defined less by literary discourse than by (male-dominated) scientific discourse. My study therefore includes four excurses that illuminate the complex intersections between literature and various scientific discourses during this period. The first focusses on the historical progression of the "race" debate in the 19th century, the second outlines the development of female education in Germany from 1800 to 1900, the third examines two examples of Georg Simmel's sociological utopias, and the fourth surveys the medical discourse on female (racial) beauty.

The four excurses and four interpretive chapters together reveal that, despite the rigorous compartmentalization of academic disciplines that has come about since the advent of modern Western science, the intellectual languages (of any given period) have remained permeable and interdependent.
