Lagos state, the commercial center of Nigeria, has become more diverse since the colonial days and independence in 1960. Accordingly, there is a need to reduce health care disparities among different ethnic groups that exists in the Nigeria due to prejudice against a variety of tribal groups throughout the country. Although cultural competency training has been shown to reduce the effects of prejudice, an insufficient number of studies have been conducted to allow for proactive change in implementing cultural competency training in the public sector health care system in Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the cultural competency level among health care providers in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) was associated with years of experience, tenure, educational background, ethnicity, age, and gender. The study used a non-experimental correlational design. Cultural competence was measured by Campinha-Bacote's Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence among Healthcare Professionals-Revised (IAPCC-R). A convenience sample was recruited from different departments at LASUTH, based on more than one year of tenure at the facility. Along with the IAPCC-R, a demographic survey was used to collect data. Of the 78 study participants, 55% were women. Age and tenure were found to have a relationship with cultural competence. Respondents who were older than 46-years-old and those who had longer than 6 years of tenure were more likely to be culturally incompetent. Findings from this study will help to promote social change by informing cultural competence training among the staff at the LASUTH. Such training may result in more patient-centered treatment for those seeking care at the facility.
