The purpose of this study was to: a) examine BSN and ADN student's approach to learning and which approach impacted academic success, and b) to determine if instructional strategies impacted posttest scores. This study's objective was to gain a better understanding of how nursing students approach learning and provide insight into the effects of instructional strategies on students' academic achievement. The nursing shortage has been well documented. One way to ease this shortage, is to assist nursing students in their pursuit of a nursing degree. Many nursing students are not aware of their approach to learning. In order to be successful in nursing programs, students must be mindful of the approach to learning that leads to academic success. It is just as important for nurse educators to be cognitive of the influence that teaching strategies have on students' approach to learning. Previous research has suggested that students that utilized deep learning, gained a better understanding of content and achieved greater academic success. The questionnaire, Revised Two Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F), was used to assess the approach to learning that the BSN and ADN students in the sample utilized. The results of this study did support the literature that deep learners achieved higher grades. A quasi-experimental research methodology provided the foundation for the second part of the study. The classes were divided into two groups. Group X1 received content via lecture and group X2 received content utilizing case study as an instructional strategy. Results indicated that instructional strategies do impact mean score improvement. However, analysis also indicated that there was no significant differences within or between the deep or surface learners nor within or between group X1 and group X2. This finding was not supported in previous research. The results of data analysis from this study provided information that can assist both students and faculty and contribute to student success. Nursing students must be aware of how they approach the learning task and which methods lead to greater academic success. Nurse educators, in order to maximize student learning in the classrooms, also must be aware of the influence of teaching strategies on student success.
