As a science of performance, human performance technology (HPT) embraces a systematic and research-informed approach to address performance related issues at all levels. Although widely accepted as the process framework in the field, the ADDIE model, an acronym for analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, is regarded as elusive and generic. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to propose and examine an action research (AR) based framework that will augment rigorous and research-informed practice in the field. This study utilized a multiple-case research design and 20 written documents of exemplary HPT practice were selected and coded against categories theoretically derived from AR principles and processes. A within-case summary table was generated for each case and a cross-case synthesis word table was created for each category across the 20 cases to identify frequencies and patterns.

The findings indicated that the overall practice of HPT professionals corresponded to the principles and processes of the AR framework. When AR principles were concerned, HPT professionals worked collectively with stakeholders and other experts in an organization and intentionally solicited participation from the front-line employees in solving performance related issues. As for AR process, an HPT-AR process framework was identified and featured with nine steps. Within the process, a systematic and iterative cycle of data planning -- data collection -- data analysis, which captures the essence of research-informed practice in AR, was embedded and paralleled the overall ADDIE process as well as its individual phrases with augmented rigor to guide research-informed and systematic practice in the field. The implications of the findings were discussed and future research was recommended.
