Musical expression, or a performer's interpretation of the aesthetic message intended by the composer, involves thoughtful manipulation of perceptual variables such as dynamics, tempo, articulation, and timbre. Musical expression is commonly associated with artistry and achievement in music, yet research on pedagogy for teaching musical expression to wind instrumentalists is limited. This study explored perspectives from 7 professional wind instrumentalists and conductors about strategies for strengthening current pedagogical techniques for teaching expression on wind instruments. Theories of musical intelligence, emotional intelligence, and musical expectation provided the framework for answering the research questions about how musical expression is defined, demonstrated, measured, and taught. The qualitative tradition of the Delphi method guided the design of the surveys used for three rounds of data collection. For each round, top responses were identified and resubmitted to participants to prioritize in order of importance. Findings suggest that the achievement of artistry in musical expression is closely linked to a performer's ability to successfully communicate his or her interpretation of the music to a listener. Findings also indicate that skills for communicating musical interpretation are learned through modeling and imitation. The study may provide valuable impetus for social change in music education by providing educators with a deeper understanding of pedagogical strategies for teaching musical expression to wind instrumentalists.
