There are many studies that examine the impact of trade liberalization on productivity but few studies examine this impact on the employment of informal workers. Most importantly, these studies have not reached a consistent conclusion as to the impact on informality. First, this dissertation develops a new theoretical model examining the impact of trade liberalization on the employment of informal workers, defined as the portion of a country's production of goods and services that do not comply with the law e.g. pay less than minimum wage, or where a worker who does not receive employment benefits. This new theoretical model explains why some studies failed to find the impact of trade liberalization on informal workers' employment. The model predicts that through trade liberalization, the informal employment of the domestic industry increases whereas the export sector decreases in informal employment. The result is a neutral effect if the sizes of the increase and decrease are equal. Second, this dissertation uses a new dataset to empirically examine the impact of trade liberalization on informality in Thailand. This dissertation is the first to use Thailand's dataset and finds that, in aggregate level, a one percentage point decrease in Thailand's import tariffs leads to an increase in the informal employment in Thailand by about one percentage point. A decrease, in aggregate level, in China's import tariffs, on the other hand, leads to a decrease in the informal employment in Thailand by, on average, 1.2 percentage points.
