This dissertation explores the ethnohistory of Pentecostalism among the Blackfeet Indians of Montana in an effort to illuminate notions of identity on the reservation. The Pentecostal experience has had substantial effects on Blackfeet Indians thus producing unique and multifaceted identities that interrogate both Pentecostal and Indian modes of existence. Although these points of convergence may disrupt typical Native identity formation, it is my position that Blackfeet Pentecostals continue to maintain their Native identity. It seems that on the surface some Blackfeet Pentecostals have abandoned their traditional ways in exchange for a Christian/Pentecostal identity. But the Native social situation is much more complex. Using theories concerning ethnic boundaries, I demonstrate that Blackfeet Pentecostals employ cultural signals in order to maintain the boundaries around which their Indian identity is produced. I employ two methodologies in the investigation of Pentecostal and Native identities. First, as a person who identifies himself as Pentecostal, I use an autoethnographic method to explore the introspective aspects of Pentecostal identity. Second, an ethnohistorical method is used to outline the development and diffusion of the Pentecostal movement among the Blackfeet in Montana.
