This paper identifies the potential differences in the college decision making process between students from rural versus non-rural areas, as well as potential differences in their knowledge base regarding personal finance. A review of literature and previous studies done on this topic describes differences that have been found and what has been done to alleviate some of the disadvantages that seem to hinder rural students in their post-secondary decisions. Based on the information in the literature review, a survey was created to collect data on the factors used by the current freshmen class at The College of St. Scholastica to choose CSS as their college choice. The survey also collected data on the basic levels of personal finance knowledge of these freshmen. The results of the survey did not indicate a difference between rural and non-rural students in either the college decision making process or personal finance knowledge, most likely due to the fact that all of the participants were already students at CSS. These results are further described and discussed, as well as the potential for future research on the topic.
