Business decisions to assure profitability have negatively affected employee morale and well-being, resulting in employee absenteeism, presenteeism, and stress. This study explored the role of workplace humor and fun on employee morale and well-being. Using a phenomenological approach, this study resulted in the collection and analysis of participants' lived experiences of humor and fun when used in the workplace. A purposeful sampling of employees who work in the middle Georgia region in the public and private acquisition corps resulted in 21 semistructured interviews. The participant responses were grouped, analyzed, validated, and interpreted against the incongruity and complexity theories. The findings from the study indicated that adaptive humor and fun improved coworker relationships and increased productivity. Fun activities in the workplace encouraged team building and camaraderie, while adaptive humor improved trust amongst coworkers. Conversely, maladaptive humor and fun was offensive and negatively affected productivity because of increased employee absenteeism, presenteeism, and stress. Open bay work areas resulted in unintended effects when maladaptive humor was overheard in the workplace, increasing opportunities for employees to feel disparaged by the humor. Positive social change resulting from this study may be improved employee morale and well-being resulting in less absenteeism, presenteeism, and work-related stress. Other employee benefits may include improved coworker relationships and increased trust amongst coworkers. The organizational benefits from better employee morale and well-being may include increased productivity and profitability.
