A qualitative, grounded theory approach was used to understand how women overcome workplace bullying. The data from 10 semi-structured interviews of women who have overcome bullying or developed resilience after a bullying experience generated six phases of overcoming workplace bullying. These phases are (a) initial shock experienced; (b) introspection of personal feelings and contribution leading to reassessment of the situation and circumstance; (c) external review of the bullying condition, from a flight or fight perspective; (d) a renewed desire to change the situation through resilience or an escape from the job; (e) adopting resilience or leaving the bullying situation; and (f) growing from the experience. The findings of this research extend the literature available on management of bullying in the workplace and growth process of traumatized women after the experience. The research results indicate that women experience flight, freeze or fight as an initial response to bullying before transiting through the full grief process. The indicator that a woman has overcome bullying is the reflection and growth after the trauma. The research buttresses the importance of creating an environment that dissuades bullying and encourages vulnerability and growth. Implications from the study are offered for psychology practitioners, targets of bullying, and organizational leaders.
