Staff turnover and an intention to resign are problems among public and private human service workers, and burnout is one predictor of these long-standing problems. Research studies have related burnout to various human services employees' personal and performance outcomes. More specifically, studies have related burnout and organizational citizenship behaviors. However, the relationships that exist between each of the three burnout dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) and organizational citizenship behavior of human service workers were unknown. Using a sample of human service employees working for public and private nonprofits throughout the state of Louisiana, a quantitative research study was conducted to assess the relationships between each burnout dimension and organizational citizenship behavior. The study adopted a predictive correlational design to determine if each burnout dimension will predict organizational citizenship behavior. The results indicated that a strong negative linear relationship existed between each burnout dimension and organizational citizenship behavior of public and private nonprofit human service employees. The results also indicated that emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are significant predictors of organizational citizenship behavior. Personal accomplishment was not a significant predictor of organizational citizenship behavior. More research is needed to gain a better understanding of how personal accomplishment relates to organizational citizenship behavior among public and private nonprofit human service workers.
