Many veterans from Gulf War Era II have a difficult time obtaining or maintaining civilian employment. There are limited empirical data available about the effects of military service on the employment outcomes of this veteran population. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the transition from military to civilian life and the influence of this transition on the vocational identity of U.S. Army combat veterans who served in Gulf War Era II. Guided by Marcia's identity status theory and the cognitive information processing approach to career problem solving and decision making, semistructured interviews were conducted with 5 U.S. Army combat veterans who attend community college in the western United States. Data were analyzed using the 6-step interpretative phenomenological analysis method. The findings of this study reflect transition difficulties related to isolation, strained relationships with friends and family members, a lack of direction, and unemployment, all of which contribute to vocational identity and the development of social and professional networks in the civilian world. This study may contribute to positive social change by encouraging political and social dialogues about how to improve transition workshops and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and how to amend the Post 9/11 GI Bill so it better serves Gulf War Era II veterans in their development of a vocational identity in the civilian world.
