Historical factors that contribute to Haiti's current functioning, current and past traumas Haitian children face, the lack of a structured healthcare system in Haiti, cultural approaches that should be implemented when working with Haitian individuals, and the use of creative arts therapies with children who have experienced trauma are discussed. Research indicates a need for programming addressing cultural barriers that exist when Haitian individuals receive treatment from foreigners and the need for culturally grounded treatment interventions. There is a need for a child-focused program incorporating creative arts therapies based on the following: (1) the current gaps in current psychological resources for children in Haiti; (2) Such program may meet the current needs of Haitian children who have experienced trauma; (3) creative arts therapies model may influence change in Haitian children's lives as it incorporates important cultural beliefs through the use of art, music, dance, and play.
