Implications of increasing numbers of online courses go beyond learning outcomes and attrition rates. Academic online faculty is directly impacted by the online format. This quantitative project assessed the results of an online versus face-to-face pharmacology course given to RN to BSN students at a university in the Midwest. Courses were held with similar assessment and content, controlling for rigor. Course outcomes were compared including attrition rates, quiz and case study grades and course evaluations. Out of 53 students 40% chose the online course. 94% of the students successfully completed the online course and 100% completed the face-to-face. No statistical significance was found for grades or attrition. Mean scores related to student satisfaction, however, was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The impact of the lower student satisfaction scores can affect the academic faculty progression through promotion and tenure.
