Takht-i Sulaiman, the only well-preserved secular architectural complex from the Ilkhanid Mongol period in Iran, was built by the second Ilkhanid ruler Abaqa in the late thirteenth century on top of a Sasanian Zoroastrian sanctuary in the Azerbaijan region of Iran. It was used as a summer residence for the Il-khans and housed the treasury of Abaqa's son Arghun probably also that of Abaqa's wife Bulughan Khatun. The significance of the monument for Ilkhanid architecture can be clarified only through a comprehensive analysis of its functional, structural, and decorative aspects, based on Persian, Chinese, and other historical sources, excavated materials, and archaeological reports about other Mongol cities.

The functions, structures, and decorative schemes of the site reflect its ownership by the Il-khans who maintained a close relationship with the Qa'ans in China and observed Mongol customs. Like other Mongol imperial cities, it seems to have developed from a summer encampment and contained both permanent buildings and temporary tents. The complex's south-southeast orientation and its inclusion of buildings with polygonal ground plans reflect Mongol preference. Its decorative repertoire included some Chinese symbols of rulership and introduced the Mongols' favorite colors.

On the other hand, the Iranian builders and craftsmen contributed their traditional techniques and designs. The four-aivan plan was used both for the entire plan of the palace and for some of the buildings. The monument was abundantly decorated with tiles in a variety of shapes which were embellished with various designs and executed in a variety of techniques. Among their motifs were pictorial and calligraphic quotations from the Iranian epic Shahnama. An analysis of smooth luster-painted tiles contributes to the dating of other Ilkhanid luster-painted tiles by creating a frame of reference for their date formulae, poetic inscriptions, design schemes, motifs, and paintings styles.

In conclusion, the Ilkhanid phase of Takht-i Sulaiman demonstrates a characteristic of the Ilkhanid period, that is, the coexistence of Chinese-Mongol and Iranian elements.
