Interpersonal communication is a dynamic process of creating and exchanging meaning among individuals that produces thoughts, feelings, and actions. Personality is a variable in this process. Communication competence is an assessment of whether an individual communicates in an appropriate and effective manner, and is critical to the exchange of meaning, cooperation among people, and the achievement of desired outcomes. In this study, the relationship between personality traits and assessments of communication competence was explored. Based in communication theories from communication sciences, philosophy, and linguistics, and personality theories of Jung and Freudian-influenced Berne, this quantitative study used a correlation analysis of archival personality and performance data of 223 executives, to examine the relationship between personality traits and assessments of communication competence. Weak positive relationships were found between action- and group-oriented personality traits and assessments of communication competence. Weak negative relationships were found between assessment-oriented personality traits and assessments of communication competence. This research provides a basis for future study of personality and communication competence. Findings also indicate to organizational psychologists and leadership development practitioners that personality may play a role in the development of communication competence, and that leaders may possess the ability to be competent communicators regardless of personality type. Positive social implications in organizations with leaders who communicate competently include improved teamwork, motivation, employee satisfaction, and organizational performance, reduced stress, and more successful change management.
