Today's evolving business environment requires organizations to combine the talents of diverse and dispersed individuals to develop creative solutions to complex problems. One such emerging concept used by successful organizations to leverage the diverse talents of dispersed individuals is collective creative problem solving (CCPS) in distributed work teams. The goal of this study was to understanding the nature of collective creative problem solving (CCPS) in geographically dispersed teams through examination of information technology (IT) distributed work teams in a U.S. federal IT defense agency. Interviews were conducted with a snowball and convenience sample of 21 IT specialists to explore and provide a descriptive account of the perceptions, ideas, and lived experiences of team leaders and team members on CCPS in IT distributed work teams. Five core themes emerged to reveal an in-depth understanding of CCPS in IT distributed work teams. Interviews revealed the core themes of: (a) building a CCPS distributed work team, (b) the importance of stimulating team creativity through team interaction in dispersed teams, (c) the intrinsic and extrinsic motivators to CCPS, (d) the challenges in leading CCPS from a distance, and (e) the criticality of information technology to CCPS. Conclusions drawn from the findings provided actionable recommendations for leaders and practitioners to leverage the full capabilities of CCPS in a dispersed working environment. Recommendations include (a) facilitating a trusting environment, (b) creating stability and flexibility, (c) using creative team building and training to increase team-based creativity, (d) recognizing team creative endeavors, (e) empowering team members to coalesce and create, and (f) reducing isolation.
