This qualitative study sought to generate a practice and policy-relevant grounded theory from conceptualized data of mental health professionals' experiences on social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Due to the rapid growth of these sites, little is known regarding online participation, such as how this technology is used, and the potential issues that professionals face when personal and professional lives intersect online.

Adjusted, conversational interviewing was conducted with 26 mental health professionals. The main concern that arose out of research interviews was a loss of control over other's perceptions and the loss of ability to compartmentalize the different parts of identities associated with personal, public, private, and professional selves. Participants resolved this main concern through the author-identified basic social process of managing digital identities.

Managing digital identity is a four-stage process discovered by the researcher that involves 1) deconstructing identity and assessing technology, 2) creating identities, 3) presenting identities, and 4) monitoring, evaluating, and reconstructing identities These four stages are characterized by different functions, conditions, challenges, and sub-stages. Deconstructing identity and assessing technology includes breaking apart the self, the technology, and others in order to determine the extent of all the pieces involved with online participation. Creating identities includes the ways that information from the deconstructing phase is sorted, prioritized, elevated and demoted, aligned and associated, and posted on sites. Presenting identities is how we present and brand the self to the outside world and involves a carefully constructed balance between impression management and self-expression. Finally, once online in one or multiple contexts, professionals monitor, evaluate, and reconstruct identities according to their own and other's reactions. This final stage may influence a return to earlier stages.

Managing online identity has implications for social workers and other mental health, clinical, counseling, and human services professionals' experiences online. Implications for practice, policy, and education are presented. This study indicates that mental health professionals face unique issues when managing their online identities.
