Thesis (M.A.)--University of South Alabama, 2013.
Self-concept is a personal belief that develops at a young age and fluctuates occasionally throughout one's life. Previous research suggests that this belief of self-worth, confidence, and emotional stability can affect other areas of one's personal life, such as perceived threats to the romantic relationship and communication tactics used. This study analyzed correlations between reports of self-concept---either high or low---and one's tendency to become upset during jealousy-evoking situations. This study also observed self-concept and its effect on communication style. Ultimately, individuals who were in the high self-concept group were less likely to become jealous and utilized more forms of the indirect communication style in their courtships, such as being friendly, attentive, relaxed, and open. People with high self-concept were also more dominant in interpersonal situations. Overall, results suggest that low self-concept may promote jealous tendencies, as well as increase dramatic and argumentative communication in one's romantic relationship.
