This dissertation addresses the roles memory and time play in Julio Llamazares' narrative and non-fiction prose. It also explores the discursive interplay among different literary genres, and the challenges that abound when an author departs from generic, conventional rules. In other words, Llamazares' work defies the traditional expectations of the established genres and offers to his critics a challenge to classify him. Is he a novelist, a poet, an essayist, a journalist, or a philosopher?

I examine Llamazares' historical, literary and ideological background. Specifically, I focus on the novels produced during the Franco years (1939-1975) and the post-Franco era, from 1975 to the present. I address the issue of censorship during Franco, its effect on the writers and intellectuals of the time, and the repercussions of the ideological and literary aperture after 1975. I posit that Llamazares is an innovator within the apparently traditional narrative who has an exceptional ability to handle linguistic codes, engage the reader, and sustain interest while simultaneously offering a unique and highly original world view.

Llamazares' work evolves within the themes of time and memory to create a world that is singularly his and through which he peers at life. His world is perceived through symbols that attempt to explain ineffable aspects of human existence. This experience leads us to reflect upon a world that is on the verge of disappearance and oblivion. He gathers in his narrative "secondary" characters are elevated to the rank of "primary" ones. These, through their repeated appearance, become prototypes. Llamazares emerges as the "guardian" of memory of this world and of these people.

He uses memory to recreate a narrative space where there are no frontiers between past, present and future. He writes to rebel against the passing of time. His production underlines the voluptuousness of memory, human experience and the evanesence of memories but not at the price of obliterating their historicity. Llamazares recovers the silenced history of the Civil War and offers another version of this traumatic period of the collective history of the Spanish people.
