Becoming a parent is a crucial and irrevocable change for couples---bigger than many anticipate (Cowan & Cowan, 2000). The transition to parenthood is full of surprises. Nothing may completely prepare a couple, nor perhaps buffer them from challenges when becoming a parent. It is a time of great possibilities for couples including serious challenges to immense joys. Parenthood is an almost a near universal experience for individuals and couples, however, there is currently a severe lack of applied research and clinical treatment guidelines (Cowan & Cowan, 1995). Even more surprising is the fact that cumulative studies consistently indicate a decrease in relationship satisfaction when becoming parents (Doss Rhoades, Stanley & Markman, 2009; Mitnick, Heyman, & Smith, 2009; Twenge, Campbell, & Foster, 2003). Research has demonstrated that becoming a parent may have the most significant effect on relationship satisfaction when compared to couples without children (Twenge, Campbell, & Foster 2003). Although evidence also points to variability in reactions for couples becoming parents, significant changes and adjustments must be faced (Dyrdal & Lucas, 2013; Kohler, Behrman, & Skytthe, 2005; Mitnick, Heyman & Slep, 2009). Indeed, becoming a parent has been ranked as the sixth most stressful life event out of 102 events examined (Dohrenwend, Krasnoff, Askenasy, & Dohrenwend, 1978). It is vital for the field of psychology to develop further awareness, consideration, and in-depth research on possible clinical treatments aimed at couples transitioning to parenthood.
